GTA 6 map is twice the size of GTA 5, and Rockstar confirms simulated hurricanes
Rockstar puts an official size comparison on record for the first time and treats weather as a simulated system, not just a backdrop.
Rockstar Games has confirmed that the GTA 6 map is twice as large as the one in GTA 5. The studio shared the detail in Game Informer's new cover story, which also confirms that the game simulates tropical storms and hurricanes. Video Games Chronicle, IGN, GameStar and PC Games are among the outlets reporting on it.

The headline number is a comparison, not a measurement. Rockstar says the world is officially twice the size of its predecessor's. None of the reports give an area in square miles or kilometers.
Weather is the second major point. Rockstar confirms GTA 6 simulates tropical storms and hurricanes. That makes weather a system inside the game rather than a visual effect.
The cover story goes further. IGN lists animal species, side activities and fast travel among the new details. PC Games published new screenshots and gameplay details. GameStar summarized the full cover story.
PC Games singles out one production detail. Rockstar has a dedicated team that writes nothing but conversations for non-player characters. It shows how much effort goes into the people who fill the streets.
The launch of the story hit problems. According to IGN, the reveal crashed the Game Informer app. There was also confusion over whether the coverage was free to read.
Einordnung
GTA 5 is the reference point most players use for a Rockstar open world. Measuring the new map against it is easier to grasp than any raw figure. It is also the first official statement on size from the studio.
Size on its own says little about how a world plays. The weather news matters more here. Simulated storms and hurricanes can change a familiar area for a while. Add animal species, side activities and dedicated NPC dialogue, and the picture is of a world Rockstar wants to make denser, not only bigger.
Fast travel fits that picture. A map twice as large means longer trips, and IGN reports Rockstar gives players a way to skip them.

The reports do not say what "twice as large" covers, such as whether water or interiors count. It is also unclear how often storms and hurricanes happen and how much they affect missions. The sources do not give a release date.
