Microsoft says its new Copilot app matters as much as Office
Chat, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, custom-built tools and always-on agents now share one app, though only early testers get access at first.
Microsoft puts its rebuilt Copilot app on the same level as Office, calling it as influential as the company's productivity suite. The company introduced the new app on September 25, 2026, in a post on its official blog. It pulls chat, the Office apps, a tool builder and always-on agents into a single interface.

The app is split into three tabs: Home, Code and Autopilot. Each one covers a different kind of work.
Home is the starting point. It combines chat with Cowork, an agent that carries out multi-step tasks on its own. Word, Excel and PowerPoint run fully inside the app, which Microsoft calls Office in Copilot. Home also holds Today, a personalized dashboard.
Code targets people who need a tool that does not exist yet. They describe what they want, and Copilot builds it. The starting point is a plain-language request, not a code editor.
Autopilot is built for agents that keep running in the background. They work through tasks without someone supervising every step.
Most users will not see any of this soon. Home and Code open first to the Frontier program over the coming weeks. Autopilot enters a private preview later in September.
