How to read the radar
What the radar is
A program that scans sources across four sections several times a day, merges duplicate stories and gives each one a number from 0 to 100. The first run starts at 07:00.
The list shows the state of the day. What becomes a reel or an article is the newsroom's call; the radar delivers the order.
What goes into the number
- How much it changes for you.
- How many independent sources report it, and in how many languages.
- Whether an official source confirms it, or several outlets.
- Whether it can be told in one sentence.
- How fresh it is: the value drops hour by hour.
The number sorts, it does not decide. Whether we may show footage and whether a topic just ran, the newsroom checks separately.
How to read the number
The higher, the more weight the story carries today. The top three are set in bold.
The number is a snapshot: without new sources it drops hour by hour, and a confirmed story holds longer than a rumour.
What the newsroom has set aside, such as leaks or rumours without a source, is not on the list.
