HBO Max, Paramount+ and Discovery+ are set to become a single streaming service. Ars Technica and Engadget report the plan following Paramount's takeover of Warner. According to Engadget, Skydance is the company driving the merger of the services.

Was bekannt ist

Ars Technica names all three brands. HBO Max, Paramount+ and Discovery+ will unify into one service. Three separate products turn into one.

Engadget frames the move from the buyer's side. Skydance plans to combine HBO Max and Paramount+ into a single streaming service.

Tagesschau covers the deal behind it: Paramount's takeover of Warner. Folding the streaming services together is the part of that deal subscribers will notice first in their daily use.

Einordnung

Today, HBO Max, Paramount+ and Discovery+ run as separate services. Each has its own app and its own subscription. Anyone who wants shows from more than one catalog pays more than once and switches between apps. A single service cuts that down to one app and one account.

The business logic is simple. One service with three catalogs is easier to sell as a large package than three smaller brands that each need their own marketing, support and technology.

For subscribers, price is the open variable. A service that bundles three catalogs is unlikely to cost the same as the cheapest of today's single plans. Someone paying for just one of the three may end up paying more, with more content in return. Someone already paying for two or three could come out ahead. That math only becomes real once a price is announced.

The switch itself also carries friction: a new app, a new account, possibly new payment details. How smooth it gets depends on whether existing subscriptions move over automatically or customers have to act on their own.

Was offen ist

No name, price or launch date for the combined service is known yet. It is also unclear what happens to current HBO Max, Paramount+ and Discovery+ subscriptions, and whether the existing apps keep running during a transition period. There is no word yet on when or how the combined service will reach Germany and Austria.
